A start with the finish\ninside itself. No second chances, or<em> next<\/em>, or<em> then<\/em>\u2026\n\njust once. How I saw you. A weekend. A river.\nSitting there, cradling a cup of coffee you never\nfinished drinking once you saw me.  \n\nHow once you skipped a stone from the banks of the Don. \nHow many times has that stone felt the river\ncarry it, wash it? Lucky stone: probably more than once.\n\nHow many times will it think of your hand, \nthe grace of your action? Not once, I\u2019m sure.\nTo never know mourning, not once,\n\nnever drowning. Death is a river you\u2019re thrown in\nbut once. And I know where the stone is,\nand where it lies heavy. He has been nominated for the Relit Award, been twice longlisted for the CBC Poetry Prize, was a finalist in\u00a0<i>Arc&#8217;s Poem of the Year<\/i>\u00a0and was part of\u00a0<i>Poem in Your Pocket Day 2020<\/i>\u00a0by The League of Canadian Poets. His latest book is\u00a0<i>The Tantramar Re-Vision<\/i> (McGill-Queen\u2019s University Press, 2021). He lives in Toronto.
